Providing Aid Protocol
lt is critical that the team leader talks to the homeowner and establishes the following parameters:

  • Introduction
  • Make them feel welcome and make sure that they understand this is a volunteer effort that is free and offered by community volunteers.
  • Personal Introduction
    • Introduce the organization
    • Ask to speak to property/home owner
    • Verify you are speaking to homeowner
      • Check ID
      • Get a utility bill
      • Check property records
  • Ensure homeowner understands that you are providing this community volunteering effort at no cost to them.
    • Get homeowner contact information
      • Home Address
      • Full Name
    • Email Address
    • Phone Number
    • Picture of ID if possible
  • Before beginning work
  • It is important to make sure that volunteers do not hurt the homeowners opportunity to file a claim. Please make sure you have covered the basics and the homeowner understands that records must be kept to be able to obtain insurance and FEMA help.
    • Have you filed a claim?
      • Even if they don’t have insurance they need to be denied?
    • Have you registered for FEMA?
    • Have you taken pictures before any demolition?
    • Who will continue to take pictures throughout the demolition?
    • Do we have your permission to begin removing your property and building materials and move them to the street?
    • How high was the water? Pictures with measuring tape where the water line of flooding stopped?
      • 12” above the water line is typically removed
      • Sheetrock comes in 4’ x 8’ so 2’ , 3’ and 4’ are the most efficient cut heights.
    • Is there anything we need to be concerned with?
      • Valuables?
      • Other family members?
      • Animals?
      • Hazards?
    • Have Utilities been turned off?
      • Water?
      • Where is the water line?
      • Electricity?
      • Gas?
  • What are the areas that you need the most help with?
